Getting ghosted is no longer something people associate only with dating. It can happen during a job search, too, and few experiences are more frustrating than being ghosted by a recruiter after being told that you passed the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imagine this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You apply for a job. A recruiter contacts you and invites you for an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You prepare carefully, research the company, answer the questions and do your best to make a good impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The interview goes well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before it ends, the recruiter gives you encouraging news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou passed the interview. Please wait for the next instructions.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n So you wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A day passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You check your email repeatedly. You keep your phone nearby in case they call. You even check your spam folder because maybe, somehow, you missed their message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You send a polite follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Still nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another week passes, and eventually you realise what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You were ghosted.<\/em><\/strong>..<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is an important difference between being rejected and being ghosted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rejection gives a candidate an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It may be disappointing, but at least the person knows where they stand and can move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ghosting leaves the candidate hanging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It becomes even worse when a recruiter has specifically said that the candidate passed an interview or should expect another step in the hiring process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That statement creates an expectation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The candidate may delay other decisions, keep certain dates available or continue waiting because they genuinely believe the opportunity is still active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meanwhile, there may be no communication at all from the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most job seekers understand that companies change their minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A position may be placed on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A hiring manager may decide to choose another candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A budget may suddenly disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The company may restructure the role or cancel the vacancy completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These things happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The problem is not always the rejection itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The problem is the silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A simple email saying, \u201cThe position has been put on hold,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> or \u201cWe have decided to move forward with another candidate,\u201d<\/strong> <\/em>may be disappointing, but it gives the applicant closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It takes only a few moments to send an update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the person waiting, however, that message can mean a great deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Companies often use interviews to determine whether a candidate is professional, reliable and respectful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Candidates are evaluating the company too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The hiring process is often one of the first real experiences someone has with an organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If communication suddenly stops after several interviews, assessments or promises of another round, candidates may naturally wonder how communication works inside the company itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If an applicant disappeared after being invited to a second interview, many employers would consider that behaviour unprofessional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Candidates deserve similar consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Professional courtesy should work both ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Job hunting already requires a considerable amount of effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Candidates customise r\u00e9sum\u00e9s, write cover letters, complete assessments, research companies and prepare for interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some even rearrange work schedules or personal commitments to attend interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When recruiters say that a candidate has successfully passed a stage, that person may naturally begin planning around the opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why disappearing without an update can create unnecessary uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The candidate does not necessarily need a long explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes all they need is an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Is the application still active or not?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Recruiters are busy. Hiring managers get delayed. Recruitment processes rarely move exactly according to schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Candidates generally understand that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But when a promised update cannot be delivered on time, a short message can make a significant difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something as simple as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe hiring process is taking longer than expected. Your application is still being considered, and we will contact you once we have an update.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It tells the candidate that they have not been forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And if the company has decided not to proceed, saying so respectfully allows the applicant to stop waiting and focus on other opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nobody expects every interview to result in a job offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rejection is part of job hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What candidates should be able to expect, however, is basic communication, particularly after they have invested time in interviews and have been told that they successfully completed a stage of the recruitment process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A rejection email may disappoint someone for a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Silence can leave them wondering for weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recruiters often talk about finding the right candidate and creating a positive candidate experience.
